Putting the Love into Valentine’s Day
Valentine’s Day is the day we officially celebrate our love for each other; we buy each other soppy cards, boxes of chocolates and huge bunches of flowers to say ‘I love you’. But after years together, it’s difficult to keep the romance alive and fresh, which is why Relate Plymouth, is offering advice to couples on how to ignite the spark once again this Valentine’s Day.
Sue Hirons of Relate Plymouth, said: “We’ve all seen the couples in restaurants who have run out of things to say to each other, or the couple who is having a discreet argument behind the wine menu. It’s totally understandable, after years of being together of course you can run out of things to talk about and arguments can easily flare up - you know how to push each other’s buttons.
“But having a long term relationship certainly does not condemn you to years of meals in silence and solitude. The following tips can help you put some spice back into your relationship and make this Valentine’s Day one to remember:
1. Make a pact not to talk about anything that you know might create stress or friction between you – just for one day
2. Use the time together to discuss hopes and dreams you have for the future or plan your summer holiday
3. Take some old photos with you and enjoy wandering together down memory lane
4. Plan a few topics ahead of your date so you’ve got something up your sleeve if conversation dries up
5. Do something before you go out for your candlelit supper- why not go 10 pin bowling, or ice-skating or visit your local theatre. Or if you can afford it, push the boat out and go on an experience together such as a balloon trip or motor racing – doing exciting things together can really get your heart-racing and help you to reconnect over something extra-ordinary!
