Case Study 2 - Amrit and Raj

Psycho Sexual therapy at work

Amrit and Raj had a strong, loving relationship and were overjoyed at the arrival of their first child after fours years together. After the birth, both wanted to see a return to their active sex life, but Amrit found the idea of penetration unbearable.

After struggling with the problem for a number of months and becoming increasingly unhappy, Raj insisted that Amrit seek the advice of a doctor. She put it off but eventually made an appointment with a female doctor at her practice. The doctor explained that their was no physical reason what Amrit couldn’t return to full sexual relations with her husband, and recommended that they go to Relate and ask to see a psychosexual therapist.

The initial assessment revealed that the birth has been very draw out and painful for Amrit resulting in a number of stitches. In time, she realised that the problem with intercourse was psychological because of the association with the terrible pain of childbirth. She was also fearful of becoming pregnant again and this was adding to her anxiety.

Raj and Amrit admitted that they had been unable to talk these problems through at home and appreciated the insight and objective expertise that the therapist brought to the situation.

In treatment, the couple were encouraged to gently explore their own and each others bodies afresh. In a specially designed programme, which was specific to Amrit and Raj’s needs, they were able to build up confidence again and eventually re-establish a full and active sexual relationship.
