Case Study 1 - Caroline and Matthew

Psycho Sexual therapy at work

For Caroline and Matthew, Sealing their love in front of family and friends at a huge wedding was to be just the beginning. So how, only three years on, was their sex life non-existent?

When they came along to psychosexual therapy – Caroline was alerted to Relate’s services by an article in a Sunday paper and began to explore their busy lives, the reasons soon came to light. Matthew, 32, was regularly working 14 hour days as an insurance broker and found himself popping into the office at weekends too. Caroline, 33, a journalist, was working stressful shifts on a daily newspaper.

Weekends were spent living it up on Saturdays nights and recovering on Sunday mornings, if they were lucky, the mountains of washing up and ironing were tackled at some point over the weekend.

Relate’s therapist helped the couple realise that they were driven by the needs to work long hours and difficult hours, that they were constantly exhausted and that their relationship was not being nurtured or even maintained. It was no wonder that their romance and intimacy were so far down their list of priorities.

The therapist advised them to set special time aside at least twice a week when they could be together. He gave them intimate touching exercises to do as homework during these times. Caroline and Matthew found them remarkably relaxing and realised through this experience that their sexual relationship has a casually of their lifestyle.

Before too long, spending quality time together became second nature once more, and they recaptured the sexual excitement and enjoyment that had previously found in each other.
